Objectives

Work Packages

WP1

Project coordination and management

Coordination of the project at a strategic level to ensure planning, follow-up and monitoring of progress, keep European Commission officers informed of the project’s status, implement decision-making procedures and appropriate project management, ensure data management and develop the Gender Action Plan.
Leader: UPC. Participants: all

WP2

Techno-economic, regulatory, environmental, and social requirements for new pumped storage plants (PSP) equipment and tools

Analysis of the compliance of each demonstration site with techno-economic, regulatory, environmental and social requirements by defining common criteria and requirements and business use cases and models.
Leader: EDPN. Participants: ANDRITZ, EDF, EDPP, GE Vernova, HES-SO, INESC TEC, NORCE, UPC, UT, vgbe

WP3

Advanced monitoring solutions and cyber-physical platform for advanced decision support (CADS)

Development and testing of operational and simulation tools for control and maintenance capable of providing near real-time outputs for decision-making and maintenance strategies, through the creation of a set of virtual sensors to detect harsh operating conditions and a CADS integrating multiple virtual models into a co-simulation platform.
Leader: UPC. Participants: ANDRITZ, EDF, EDPN, EDPP, FAEN, GE Vernova, HES-SO, HUNOSA, INPG, KAIZEN, NORCE, SADIM, Sener

WP4

Innovative control and operational management of PSPs

Laying the algorithmic foundations for the operation and optimisation of next-generation PSPs, through real-time controllers to minimise the wear and tear of critical components and algorithms to optimise energy management and participation in electricity service markets and to design the optimal battery system.
Leader: HES-SO. Participants: ANDRITZ, EDF, EDPN, EDPP, FAEN, GE Vernova, HUNOSA, INESC TEC, KAIZEN, NORCE, SADIM, UPC

WP5

Improved equipment for harsh operating fluids and saltwater environments

Development and testing of specialised corrosion and biofouling coatings and tools to reduce maintenance costs for cleaning affected surfaces and design of water intakes and other PSP components operating in salt water to correlate antifouling coating properties with water parameters.
Leader: Sener. Participants: ANDRITZ, EDF, GE Vernova, UPC

WP6

Demonstration of innovative pumped storage equipment and digital tools linking the mechanical storage with innovative storage management systems

Practical demonstration of the innovative pumped storage equipment and storage management systems in real use cases by carrying out a monitoring process and refining the solutions based on the analysis of the collected data.
Leader: EDF. Participants: ANDRITZ, EDPN, EDPP, FAEN, GE Vernova, HES-SO, HUNOSA, INESC TEC, INPG, KAIZEN, NORCE, SADIM, Sener, UPC

WP7

Integrated sustainability

Assessment of the sustainability of each demonstrator by analysing environmental, economic, and social aspects, considering local and global supply chain impacts, and comparing innovations with conventional technologies and non-hydro energy storage options.
Leader: UT. Participants: all

WP8

Market uptake and post-project exploitation roadmap

Development of an exploitation plan including a marketing and promotion strategy and recommendations to support the industrial realisation of the key exploitation results, including the definition of future scenarios and a roadmap for post-project exploitation with recommendations for researchers, policymakers and investors.
Leader: vgbe. Participants: all

WP9

Stakeholder engagement, dissemination and communication

Design and implementation of a comprehensive strategy for the full engagement of STOR-HY stakeholders. Implementation of dissemination and communication strategies integrated with stakeholder engagement and participatory citizenship.
Leader: Zabala. Participants: all
